Laverton is a region in Western Australia that is located approximately 950 kilometres east-northeast of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. The region takes its name from the Laverton township which was established in the early 1900s and has a population of just over 200 people as of the 2016 Australian Census. The region is rich in history, with a diverse range of cultural and natural heritage sites reflecting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous histories of the area.

The Laverton region was first explored by Europeans in 1863, with the notable explorer Charles Hunt leading an expedition to the area. The first pastoral leases in the region were granted in the 1870s, leading to the establishment of several sheep farms in the area. The discovery of gold in Laverton in 1896, however, would soon change the region's history.

Following the discovery of gold, the population of the Laverton area exploded as miners from around Western Australia and beyond flocked to the region to try their luck on the goldfields. The Laverton district became the site of several large mining operations, with the Golden Gift Mine, Sons of Gwalia Mine, and Mt Morgan Mine being just a few examples. Laverton soon became a thriving town, with stores, hotels, banks, and other businesses servicing the needs of the growing population.

The Aboriginal people of the Laverton region have a long history in the area, having lived in the region for tens of thousands of years. The Wongatha people are the traditional owners of the land in the region, with their custodianship and connection to the land being recognised under Australian law. The Wongatha people have a rich cultural heritage, with traditional knowledge, language, and customs that have been passed down through generations.

The impact of European settlement on the Wongatha people, however, has been significant. The introduction of new diseases, forced removal from their lands, and dispossession of traditional territories has had a devastating impact on the Wongatha people. Today, there are ongoing efforts to recognise and support the traditional owners of the land in the region, including through the development of cultural centres and programs.

The Laverton region has also been the site of significant mining activity over the past century, with a legacy of environmental impact. The natural heritage of the region, including unique rock formations and fragile ecosystems, has been subject to significant disturbance as a result of mining activities. Efforts are now underway to rehabilitate these sites, with a focus on sustainable management of the natural environment.

In recent years, the Laverton region has seen an influx of tourists, drawn to the natural and cultural heritage of the area. Visitors to the region can explore the many historic sites, including the ruins of old gold mines, and learn about the rich local history at the Laverton Heritage and Tourist Centre. The Laverton region is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including many species that are endemic to the area.

The Laverton region is a unique and important part of Australia's history, with a rich heritage that reflects both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. The region's unique combination of natural and cultural heritage makes it a valuable asset for future generations, and efforts are underway to ensure that this heritage is recognised and preserved for years to come.
